When Fashion and Classic Motors Collide

Dean’s a car guy (contrary to the fact that he drives a white Smart car). When we were in South Africa we visited the Franschhoek Motor Museum. I was relatively bored looking at the cars, but he was clearly in heaven.

I had to use my imagination to really see the cars.

I paired the cars with the outfits I’d wear while riding them (a la runway Fall 2012 runway looks) and just like that, I became a car fan.

What car would you drive? And more important, what outfit will you wear this fall?

Life of a NYC Mermaid… With the Pictures to Prove It

Pinterest. Pinterest. Pinterest. I love it. It’s my happy place. Stressful day? Just peruse pinterest. For those who are living under an offline-rock: 1. Good for you. 2. Pinterest is site that allows you to keep and share a digital bulletin board.

Lately, brands have been having “pinterest contests.”  #PinItToWinIt, they say. Make the best board that represents their brand (or theme) and win a prize. I’ve never entered one, but when I saw Mermaid Inn  - my favorite Upper West Side restaurant – posted a contest (theme: Life of a NYC Mermaid) with the prize being a gift certificate to the restaurant, I couldn’t resist. So I spent a “little” bit of time on it and waited for the big announcement. And then… I lost…

It was so sad. Not even an honorable mention. I’m sure the winner slept with the judges or something. Actually, her board was pretty insane (with 142 pins!) and I deleted mine (all 17 sad pins) immediately.  But here are some of the photos that made me sure I’d found the Life of a NYC Mermaid, even if I didn’t #PinItToWinIt.

DIY Purse: Polka Dot Trend

Aren’t these famous ladies adorable in their polka dots? I certainly think so. But, for some reason, when I – a non-famous lady – put some dots on I feel a bit silly. So, as I ease into this constantly-resurfacing trend, I decided a polka dot clutch was the perfect first step. I still had my DIY striped leather pouch and figured it could easily be transformed. It turned out to be super easy. It would be the perfect iPad carrier or a nice splash of color as a clutch.
Here’s how I did it.

More Tips:
* Wondering where to get the perfect pouch? Try here or here.
* Make sure to press stickers all the way down.
* Not happy with the original color of your bag? No problem! I spray painted my blue bag pink, then added stickers, then painted gold!

Walk A Mile in My Studded High-Tops

I’m sure you all have that pair of heels that makes you feel sexy the moment you put them on, but do you have  a pair of sneakers that make you feel like a badass? It’s an important addition to any woman’s shoe rack. Luckily, they’re everywhere right now.

The Bachelorette may have ended more than a month ago, but Emily Maynard fans were excited to see photos of her trip to Africa for People Water, proof that this reality show love may actually be a reality. But, far more importantly, we got to see what she wore trekking through villages in Ghana. Believe me, she was not styled in safari-not-so-chic, she rocked some badass studded hightop sneakers.

I was inspired.

Counter clockwise: YSL in black; Sam Edelman in tea rose (the ones Emily is wearing); Giuseppe Zanotti in beige;   Rihanna in Louboutin

Well, I was back and forth between the $925(!) Louboutin’s and making my own for $35. For now, I’ll stick to my own.

Material Details:
- High-top sneakers: I got my H&M sneakers for $25.
- 10mm pyramid iron-on nailheads/studs: you can but them here (I did not iron)
- Gem-Tac fabric glue (available at Joann Fabrics)

Tutorial Tips:
- I put a can of soda inside the sneaker to keep the fabric firm.
- The glue dries clear so don’t worry about using too much.
- Make sure to press studs/nailheads into material so it adheres well.
- No glue? Try this ironing technique (I haven’t tried it yet but I will shortly – the soda can will be key here so the sneaker can balance on it’s side)
- Be impressed with yourself.

Keeping Up With the Manicure Madness

Ever have one of those days when you look in the mirror half way through the day and say, what am I wearing? Why didn’t I do my hair? I forgot my eyeliner and mascara? Uh, that red dot on my chin looks worse now than it did at 7am. Say hello (and goodbye) to my Monday.

And then I chipped my freshly painted nails. Just perfect.

This is what the twitterverse calls #firstworldproblems. So I stopped feeling sorry for myself, came home, surrendered to my pajamas and flipped my mood right around surfing Pinterest. The blogosphere has gone mani manic with tons of ideas to give your nails a little razzle dazzle. Have you tried any yet? If you can’t commit to these out-there styles, try just one nail (ring finger is nice) with a little sparkle or funky design and leave the rest with a solid matching color.
