Back to School with my Favorite Snack of the 90s

Just because I haven’t been a student in years and I’m not yet a mom, does NOT mean I will be missing out on back-to-school fun this year.  I’m living vicariously through my nieces and nephews who started school yesterday. To celebrate, I had a nice little Zara shopping spree yesterday with two new pairs of shoes, two pairs of work pants, and two fresh shirts. I bought an old-school composition book at the dollar store and I even made the perfect back to school snack…

When I was in 4th grade donning leggings and an over-sized tie-dyed tee, Dunk-a-roos were the ultimate snack. It’s the type of snack that would have made all the other kids beg to trade with me. That delicious Betty Crocker snack ruled the lunch room in the late 80s/early 90s.

I made a lower-fat version with nonfat yogurt and fat free cool whip. It was so delicious too cool for school.

Dunk-A-roos Back To School Recipe

1/2 box funfetti cake mix
4 oz of fat-free cool whip topping
1 container of nonfat vanilla yogurt (I actually used soy yogurt which is a little tangier so I added extra cake mix)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
colored sprinkles
Teddy grahams (of course my market only had Scooby Doo dog bone crackers, kind of strange but tasted just the same!)

1. Combine first four ingredients. 2. Let mixture chill in the refrigerator for an hour (or even overnight). 3. Before serving add sprinkles to mixture. Serve in a big dip bowl for a party or in individual packs with teddy grahams.

What was your favorite snack in school?

  1. At first I saw the picture and was like WHAT? DOG BONES? And then I looked closer…I used to love these snacks! Do they still make those?

I really want to try your recipe! Pinning it and hoping to get to it soon :)

I know, it kills me that they only had dog bone shaped grahams. It feel just as strange to eat them, but still delicious people food. Congrats on your new home – can’t wait to see what you’ve done with it on your blog.
