Hostel in the Sky and a Few Other Dream Hotels

“If heaven isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, send me back to Gimmelwald.” You may be asking what in the world is Gimmelwald? It’s a tiny, tiny village in the Alps of Switzerland. Population: 130.  Seven years ago I backpacked through Europe and saw some incredible sights, but Gimmelwald was by far my favorite. Because this was my view…

But this was hostel-ing at it’s best. It was $12/night. Sure I slept in one long bed with strangers (see here to see the bed!), but hey – look at that view.

I still dream of going back, but I might not be able to able to handle the bed bug fest. So, instead, I’ll dream of these hotels…

  1. I just found your blog via pinterest and loved this post. When I was backpacking through Europe with friends 10 years ago we stayed at that hostel in Gimmelwald. I actually loved the beds. After 12 hours of hiking, curling up with that soft and super warm down comforter was heavenly. I dream of returning also, but I would stay in hotel next time also.

I’m so glad you found the blog! Love pinterest! So amazing that you were in Gimmelwald too. Those hikes were grueling and amazing. It was 80 degrees with snow up to our knees in spots. Loved every minute.

  2. Hiked in the Swiss Alps a few years ago – Murren and Grindelwald. So awesome. We’re going back next month for another week hike in the Matterhorn region – Zermat and Kandersteg. We go with a wonderful hiking group called Alpine Hikers.
Thanks for your photos of such outrageous places to stay. I ‘favorited’ it so I can go back for periodic looks and maybe one day a stay at one of them. Where do you find such unique places?!!
