For the last two weeks, my nephew and I have been planning a covert operation to bake a “surprise” cake for his mom/my sister’s birthday. First, he sent me photos of wedding cakes he’d like to replicate, but I explained they were slightly out of my league. He informed me that we should “agree on a recipe and he would get the ingredients.” My nephew is ten, by the way.
We picked a hot chocolate triple layer cake with a mound of marshmallows on top. He told my brother-in-law that he should take my sister shopping because that always takes a really long time. We measured and poured and laughed and taste tested.
Then, on Sunday, we had a party to celebrate her birthday and the holidays. That’s where I realized I really have the coolest family. What did my family do for our get together? We went rock climbing. Each of us, from the four year olds to the sixty-something’s harnessed up and belayed away.
And then we dug into a well-deserved, perfect, delicious cake.
* This is the recipe we used for the cake (click here), but we used Kraft marshmallows because mine didn’t come out so great.
**We went to www.centralrockgym.com in Worcester, MASS.
